“America’s #1 Paranormal Talk Show”
LOGLINE
Dark of the Night is an off-the-wall paranormal talk show comedy - it’s like Comedy Bang Bang killed and ate The X Files. The result is an unholy alliance of seriousness and stupidity hosted by Eric and Alex: two friends willing to risk everything in their lives to expose the world’s darkest truths. Especially since their lives have been trending towards shitty for a solid decade. It’s not a huge risk.
SYNOPSIS
No topic is off limits for wannabe paranormal experts Eric and Alex. Aliens. Vampires. Chewbacca. And everything else dangerous and evil in this world — it’s all fair game.*
Every week on Dark of the Night, the duo offer their views on the occult, chat with weird guests, and conduct dumb experiments and investigations. In every episode, they venture to cover urgent paranormal topics, but we end up following a plot driven by their myriad of personal problems. To be fair, it’s hard to concentrate on ghosts when you just found out you’re getting sued for back taxes.
So are they perfect? No. Do they self-sabotage on the air 100% of the time? Sure. But the two would never let something as trivial as “completely ruining the show” get in the way of doing the show. They’re just that good.
Eric and Alex have one ultimate driving force: the belief that everyone else on the planet is wrong but them. They’re a pair of lone rangers fighting the good fight in a world that refuses to recognize what’s truly important (Sasquatch.) To the untrained eye, they’re middle-aged guys with no life partners and entry-level jobs at Best Buy and bad credit scores. But only they know the Truth: they’re the greatest heroes the world has ever known. Probably. I mean right?
*Excludes: war, genuine human problems
EPISODE EXAMPLES
HOW TO START A CULT
The guys have no friends, but they know that’s because no one really does. Otherwise, they would be losers. So they instruct the audience on the best way to start a cult, as it’s the only feasible way to get people to hang out with you.
DOMESTICATING SASQUATCH
Sasquatch is dangerous and smart. Eric and Alex know that if we are to ever live with him in peace, we must capture him and teach him to live like a lazy slob. The two explore capturing methods and potential benefits.
FIXING A PARANORMAL HARD DRIVE
The guys have something important on a hard drive and it crashed, probably because it’s haunted. They invite Jared, their supervisor from Best Buy, to sit in and help them fix it. Regrettably, Jared turns out to be a psychopathic murderer.
DEMONOLOGY WITH SPECIAL GUEST DAGMARA
Demon expert and witch Dagmara visits and falls for Eric, turning Alex into a pissed off third wheel. Soon, Alex is ousted and the two lovebirds transform the show into a paranormal Sonny and Cher.
MAKING A FAKE PARANORMAL VIDEO
The Truth is paramount. However, if you’re going to get attention in the current media environment, you might need to go for something a little saucier. With the help of a guy they don’t really like, Eric and Alex instruct the audience on how to create a fake paranormal porno.
THE DARK OF THE NIGHT TELETHON
When their landlord raises their rent, Eric and Alex are threatened with losing their production studio and the show. So they host a telethon with tons of surprise guests to raise the 125 thousand dollars they’ll need. But what if they only raise 8 dollars? (They only raise 8 dollars.)
CHARACTERS
Alex Meyers
Alex is prone to angry rants and waxes philosophical about fringe paranormal issues like “which brand of compact car would Dracula buy?” He’s divorced with two estranged children, and you know what? He thinks that’s just great, because he’s too rock-and-roll to live an average, humdrum, happy life with close friends and family and somewhere to go at Christmas.
Eric Yearwood
Like a poet, Eric wears his heart on his sleeve and yearns for true love; and he knows as soon as he proves ghosts and aliens and stuff exist, everyone will want to date him. He has a knack for innovation, often creating video games and virtual sets for the duo to explore. Eric’s quest for the Truth has taken him to very the limits of civilization (he lives in his car.)
ABOUT US
Eric and Alex are not just the hosts - they’re the creators. Yes, that’s right! They used their real names for the main characters because it’s conceptually interesting. Or something akin to that. It’s NOT because they’re lazy, alright? Really though can you think of any other names? I mean they can’t, that’s for sure.
Anyway here’s a bit about them and why they love this idea!
Eric and Alex met at UCB Digital and have worked together doing post-production on such shows as The Opposition and Action Bronson Watches Ancient Aliens. They had the idea for Dark of the Night back in 2015. It was inspired by the late paranormal radio host Art Bell and their love of 80s/90s sci-fi like Unsolved Mysteries and The Thing.
Between 2016-2019 they performed the show as an improvised livestream and developed the format, tone and characters until they were absolutely perfect (but we’ll take any and all notes you have.) The pitch trailer is assembled from those livestreams with the help of filmmaker Kristopher Knight, who shot additional b-roll and also directed a lot of the streams.
